Inflammation of Achilles tendon and surrounding structures.
Incidence:
Achilles tendonitis occus in approximately 7% of running injuries.
Symptoms:
Pain and/or swelling through the Achilles tendon and back of heel. May be worse on commencement of activity and may ease with running.
Causes:
- Poor foot biomechanics (pronated feet)
- Poor flexibility
- Poor training technique
- Hard training surface
- Incorrect footwear
Treatment:
- Correction of poor biomechanics, possibly with the use of prescribed orthoses
- Correct footwear
- Appropriate strapping
- A heal lift in the show
- Training modifications
- Muscle stretching program
