Achilles Tendonitis

Inflammation of Achilles tendon and surrounding structures.

Incidence:

Achilles tendonitis occus in approximately 7% of running injuries.

Symptoms:

Pain and/or swelling through the Achilles tendon and back of heel. May be worse on commencement of activity and may ease with running.

Causes:

  • Poor foot biomechanics (pronated feet)
  • Poor flexibility
  • Poor training technique
  • Hard training surface
  • Incorrect footwear

Treatment:

  • Correction of poor biomechanics, possibly with the use of prescribed orthoses
  • Correct footwear
  • Appropriate strapping
  • A heal lift in the show
  • Training modifications
  • Muscle stretching program
