Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is an inflammation of the sesamoid bones. The sesamoids lie on the bottom of the big toe joint. Due to their location, the sesamoids are exposed to massive forces and impact in running and jumping activities.

Incidence:

Sesamoiditis accounts for approximately 1.2% of running injurues.

Symptoms:

Typically, the onset of sesamoiditis is gradual with sharp pain beneath the big toe joing which increases with walking or running.

Causes:

  • Excessive load ont he sesamoids
  • Muscle imbalances around the big toe
  • Jumping from a height
  • High-heeled shoes

Treatment:

  • Padding can help to relieve direct pressure on the sesmoid
  • A period of rest of up to four to six weeks may be require to allow this problem to settle
  • Persistent cases may require surgery
